Global Council for Tolerance: ‘Religious leaders contribute to achieving sustainability, environmental protection’

Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jarwan, President of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, said that the role of religious leaders is fundamental for promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peace. “Religions advocate for peace, and when religious leaders unite their voices, they contribute to achieving sustainability and protecting the environment, working towards a brighter future for future generations,” he said in his speech at the Global Summit of Religious Leaders held in Baku under the theme “World Religions for a Green Planet” as part of preparations for COP29.

He added that the world today faces unprecedented challenges, negatively impacting global security and stability, harming the environment, and threatening the planet’s future. “Our world is one, and any threats to peace and security directly endanger our planet and all its inhabitants.”

In this context, Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament), received Al Jarwan and they discussed the importance of the Baku Global Summit of Religious Leaders and its role in addressing several urgent issues.

The two sides explored the pivotal role religions play in combating climate change, which is one of the most pressing challenges the world is currently facing.She emphasised the significant role of the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace in promoting peace and tolerance worldwide, noting that fostering cultural diversity, tolerance, and interfaith dialogue has long been a way of life in Azerbaijan.

She pointed out that a parliamentary conference would be organised as part of COP29 activities, expressing her confidence that the conference would represent an important opportunity to discuss key issues.
