Dr. Hersh Chadha

SYNOPSIS

Born in India in 1957, Dr. Hersh Chadha OPM (Harvard), ARPS, discovered he was happiest when alone, travelling with his camera and thoughts. To date he has photographed in over 92 countries and 279 cities.

He is a man of many facets. He resides in the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai, where he runs a global network of business activities, is an avid reader, keen economist and collector of objects d’art, besides being a co-producer of a few films.

His uncompromising concern for the environment and the way man ravages it has made him focus on critical issues such as the preservation of wildlife, the protection of rain forests, the ozone layer and pollution. He has worked with a number of wildlife agencies concerned with conservation of Arabian wildlife – including The Arabian Leopard Trust and the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA) – and has made significant photographic contributions to these agencies.

Feeling for people in need, Dr Chadha considers philanthropy as a necessary tool in contributing towards human development. Education is one of the focal points in the framework of his philanthropic activity. His Internship Programme in Dubai provides opportunities for professional training, to students from all round the world, in the field of Digital Photography and Photographic Modelling. In addition, he contributes to various charities and supports upcoming sportsmen and women. Dr. Chadha has interned over 95 students in photography and modelling from various countries. The Hersh Chadha foundation has sponsored the education of over 200 students worldwide across multiple universities, by providing them with scholarship grants.

Dr. Chadha now features in the 2015 edition of the Limca Book of Records under the category, “Photo book of most cities by the same photographer”, for having launched a photo book titled Masterpiece, covering 235 cities. Also four of his books, Visions of Nature, Patterns, Masterpiece and With Ink & Film, are now available at the world’s largest library – The Library of Congress in Washington D.C., USA.

On 19th October, 2016, five of his pictures of flowers were carried to the International Space Station by the crew of Expedition 49/50.

On 1st June 2017, Dr.Chadha was the honorary guest at the ceremony of welcoming cosmonauts back from the mission, which took place at the YU.A. Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Moscow. He was given a certificate, confirming that five of his photographs were delivered to the International Space Station on 21st October 2016 and continue to be displayed in the ISS. Dr. Hersh Chadha is the first person who organised a photography exhibition in Space.

As he never tires of saying, ‘Life is beautiful and photography only enhances it.’ Indeed, ‘Have camera, will travel,’ seems to be Dr. Chadha’s eloquent mission statement.

ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION

The 1001: A Nature Trust (WWF International) -In 1996, Dr. Chadha published a series of photo-essays titled ‘Elements, I, II & III’. The proceeds from the sale of the series “Elements” went to the WWF – International. WWF’s comments were “The series is very attractive and every little bit counts in seeking to maintain and hopefully improve the state of our natural world”.

He is one of the founding members of the ‘WWF United Arab Emirates Corporate Club’. The Corporate Club provides a unique opportunity for business and industry to join forces with WWF, to conserve the environment in this area of the world and beyond, for the benefit of all concerned.

Dr. Chadha is also a founding member of ‘The 1001: A Nature Trust’ from the United Arab Emirates

The National Geographic Society – As a member supporting its interests, which include the promotion of environmental and historical conservation.

Rainforest Information Centre – Dr. Hersh Chadha has been associated with the Rainforest Information Centre (RIC) for the past several years, and has been funding their various conservation projects spread across the world from South America to India. The RIC is a non-profit, volunteer organisation dedicated to the protection of the Earth’s remaining rainforests and the indigenous people who depend on them.

MEDICAL RESEARCH

The Myelin Project – After watching the film ‘Lorenzo’s Oil’, Dr. Chadha, was so moved that he made inquiries as to how he could help with the funding of research projects for Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and other related diseases.

Dr. Chadha met Mr. Augusto Odone, Lorenzo’s father who set up the Myelin Project, for the first time in September 1995 and made a commitment to send funds that he could use as he sees fit. The funds he provided went towards setting up a research unit at Madison Wisconsin, USA.

In addition, he provided funds to continue the research at the Canadian Myelin Research Initiative’s (CMRI) Cell Transplantation Unit, founded by Julie & Wayne Simmons, at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

2013 – “India By Foot” by Sergiy Polezhaka, features images taken while traveling across the length and breadth of India in a limited time frame and portrays India in its different shades and nuances.
2016 – Talgat Subanaliev, student of Department of Photo Journalism at the American University Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan undertook a 10 days voyage across Antarctica along with researchers and photographers from all over the world; The trip was organised in collaboration with the American University Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and fully sponsored by Dr. Hersh Chadha.
2016 – Sergiy Polezhaka, the graduate of Institute of Journalism in Kiev, along with his team was sponsored for a Virtual Reality Project in the Arctic region during September – October 2016. To get exceptional footage, he shot on the territory from the Polar Circle to the northernmost point of Europe and even further, at Svalbard.
2016 – The calendar 2016 of best photos of students of the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design and of the College of KNUTD including the photo work of Dr.Hersh Chadha.
2017 – The catalog “The Best Students Works KNUTD 2017“ features the best photographic works of 2016 by students of Kiev National University of Technology and Design (KNUTD) and KNUTD College along with photo collections by the Honorary Doctor of KNUTD – Prof. Hersh Chadha.
